Course Overview

Emerging Media Capstone was an asynchronous course in which our assignments and projects were completed on a team independent schedule that aligned with our deadlines. Our team primarily used Zoom and Slack to communicate with each other and Zoom and email for contacting our client.

The Challenge

My team decided to tackle a client-based project doing a website renovation. We worked with the company Royal Change and the co-founders Sydney and Dustin Houdyshell. Our primary point of contact was Dustin. The brand is intertwined with Sydney’s fitness Youtube channel, which has 1.44 million subscribers.

Their current site has not been updated since 2018 and is housed on Weebly, a web-development tool with limited features. As the company has continuously grown over the years, the website was in need of more than just a simple redesign. Royal Change also has a paid membership plan called Sydney Squad that is currently living on a private Facebook group, providing customers with a less than ideal user experience.

The Solution

As a team and in agreement with our client, our group created a cohesive style guide, a new website on WordPress, and a members only Sydney Squad portal connected to the site. The style guide was implemented on the site which was completed with a hierarchy of typography and a color palette. The new Royal Change site was built out on a more powerful medium, WordPress, that allows their merchandise shop on Shopify to be seamlessly connected. Various plugins that help enhance the site, such as the macro calculator tool and the automatic Youtube feed connection, were implemented via WordPress. The original site had Sydney’s Free Workouts Youtube page connected by a simple hyperlink. Now, it is a fully fleshed out page on the site that displays the most recently uploaded video and has playlist options below. The new Sydney Squad portal is place just for paid members that allows them to access all of their purchased benefits in a much more efficient and pleasurable manner.

Results

Ultimately, this course provided me with knowledge on how to communicate with a client and fellow team members, as well as how to delegate tasks. We learned how to digest large quantities of data and how to efficiently and effectively apply them to our end product in a way that would most benefit the user. We created a fully functional website with aspects that had some learning curves, but in the end revealed itself as a journey we are so proud of.
